So good to see so many tonight.
We had 6 in person at the Extension and 7 via Zoom
General discussions were
*How each person's bees made it through the winter, reported by each person attending
*splits, how and when to make splits
50/50 splits, splits using Queen Swarm cells, Splits when you know where the queen is
*Spraying for caterpillars and how the sprays might affect the bees and what to do
Any experience from people reading this would be appreciated
*Use of Queen Excluders - positives and negatives
*Use of Queen Excluders to keep the Queen from leaving a recently caught swarm
Place the excluder over the bottom box and queen above the excluder. Leave in for about 6 days
*Different types of heat boxes - to heat up honey after it crystalizes
most heat with a light bulb, you can use heating pads, heaters, and Dan showed a dehydrator that has shelves in it. you can remove the shelves and place jars in it and set the temperature. One person made a solar box out of a cooler, painted it black with glass in the top.
*Current prices of honey being sold
* different methods of extracting honey - manually by removing all the comb or in extractors
*Use of beeswax
THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 18TH AT 6 PM, BOTH IN PERSON AT THE PENN STATE EXTENSION AND VIA ZOOM.
Members asked for a future meeting to be held at John and Joan Bradley's to see how they extract honey and process their beeswax. A future date will be set.
Thank you for all those that attended and for their comments and questions.
Respectfully Submitted
